Biogen Idec opens new US facility

Biogen Idec has opened a new facility focusing on patient care in RTP, North Carolina.

Independent biotech company Biogen Idec has opened a new facility in Research Triangle Park (RTP), a large research park in the US state of North Carolina.

The new 190,000 sq ft building has enabled the company to consolidate its patient services operations, bringing together more than 1,000 people in one state.

Increasing levels of manufacturing activity will be accommodated at the site and the company expects it to achieve LEED-Gold certified status in a matter of months.

Dr George Scangos, chief executive officer for Biogen Idec, said: "The expansion of our footprint in RTP underscores our commitment to providing a secure supply of medicines and to helping patients overcome obstacles to receiving them."

Machelle Sanders, vice-president of manufacturing and general manager for Biogen Idec RTP, added that the site will focus on patient care, ranging from manufacturing high-quality therapies through to providing patient support and financial assistance.

Biogen Idec is now the ninth largest employer in RTP and the second largest independent biotech company in North Carolina, manufacturing Avonex (interferon beta-1a) and Tysabri (natalizumab) for multiple sclerosis, as well as several other clinical products.
