Gamma irradiation is one of the cold sterilization techiniques. How it works? Gamma rays are emitted by cobalt60, an artificial radioisotope that emits 2 rays with always the same energy 1.17 and 1.33 MeV. Rays pass through materials killing bacterias and inactivating virus, breaking RNA and DNA chains and breacking cellulars membranes. Why it is important the energy of the rays? Because to activate materials exposed to radiations, and make them radioactive, an energy upper to 10 MeV is necessary. It is used since the 60's-70's and thereafter no kind of resitance to gamma has been developed by bacterias and virus. 
Gamma irradiation is listed by guidelines of EMA (european medicine agency) as one of the sterilization techniques and is located just after the heat sterilization as first alternative to heat.It's safe, if validated allows manufacturer of API's and FPP to declare the product sterile with no other additional requirements. There's no product handling so, risks of cross contamination are cleared. There's no risk to activate materials, as said before and there's no need to check all the batches treated because parametric released is enough.
