An accelerated lamellae formation (ALF) technique, first published in The PDA Journal (2014) by C. Sloey, C. Gleason and J. Phillips was used to produce the delaminated borosilicate glass flakes in this video.

Comparison of converting process for pharmaceutical primary glass packaging. Sodium-borate evaporates out of borosilicate glass container during converting, producing heterogenous areas that are predisposed to delaminate. Corning Valor® Glass eliminates delamination. Sodium-borate evaporation is not possible. As a result, Valor Glass containers have a uniform, chemically durable drug contacting surface.

In addition to eliminating delamination and dramatically reducing the probability of cracks, breaks and the risk of contamination by glass particles, Valor® enables smoother filling operations. Use of Valor® containers reduces line interventions, enabling lines to run at much higher speeds with improved yields. This results in more reliable access to medicines for patients around the world.

The package for purity: Valor® containers are extremely damage resistant and significantly reduce particle generation. Valor™ containers have demonstrated up to a 96% reduction in peak particle counts on commercial filling lines, substantially reducing risk of particulate contamination.

There are four steps from the formation of a heterogeneity to delamination for borosilicate glass packaging. Corning notes those steps include, 1) Formation of heterogeneity, 2) Leaching, 3) Swelling and 4) Spalling off a delaminated flake. Corning Valor® Glass is a boron-free glass package designed specifically for pharmaceutical use to eliminate delamination. Valor Glass has uniform surface chemistry and does not form boron-rich heterogeneities during converting.
