Peru's pharmaceutical exports to exceed $50m in 2012

The president of Peru's pharmaceutical industry association has predicted that exports will surpass $50 million this year.

Peru's pharmaceutical exports are set to surpass the $50 million mark this year, the country's pharmaceutical industry association Adifan has predicted.

 

This represents an increase from 2011's total of $47.4 million and continues the growth enjoyed by the nation's pharmaceutical industry since 2006.

 

Jose Enrique Silva, president of Adifan, told the Andina news agency that the quality of Peruvian drugs has led to a steady increase in demand in South America.

 

According to Mr Silva, almost a quarter of exports (23.4 per cent) consist of antibiotics and drugs to treat HIV in Ecuador, while Venezuela (18.2 per cent), Colombia (12.3 per cent) and Bolivia (12.7 per cent) account for the majority of remaining exports.

 

The Adifan president also predicted an increase in demand for cancer drugs, which he claimed will be "the next boom" for Peruvian exports.
