Silymarin is a kind of flavonoid complex consisting of silybin, silydianin, and silychrisin, derived from the milk thistle plant. It is a kind of potent antioxidant, anti-cancer agent as well as liver protecting agent. It has a lot of pharmaceutical functions

Silymarin exerts its pharmaceutical effects through various mechanism including scavenging free radicals, increasing glutathione (has detoxifying effect) level in the liver, increasing the levels of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, stimulating liver protein synthesis and inhibiting the synthesis of leukotrienes.
