"The pharmaceutical and biotech industries are honing in on new treatments for cancer, an increasingly complex disease area. According to US pharma industry group PhRMA, “cancer is not a singular condition but, rather, a collection of diseases, each with unique characteristics and features. Opportunities for innovation are continually arising, particularly when it comes to providing better targeted, more effective treatment options where existing treatments are sub-optimal for the target patients. It is against this backdrop that Irish start-up Shorla Pharma has emerged. The company was established in 2018 and was the winner of the overall award at Ireland's Best Young Entrepreneur competition in 2019. In this interview with Orlaith Ryan and Sharon Cunningham, co-founders of Shorla Pharma, we will discuss what drove two successful pharma executives to leave the relative stability of full-time employment with a pharma multi-national and embark on the huge challenge of creating a female-led start up focusing on developing drugs to treat rare, orphan and paediatric cancers.
