UK Pharma Chief Expresses Concerns for Future of Medical Research

The chief executive of the ABPI has voiced fears about the UK government's focus on 'breakthrough' drug research.

The UK government's approach is endangering the future of pharmaceutical medical research, the chief executive of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has warned.

 

Stephen Whitehead, who took over as chief executive one year ago, spoke out ahead of the next round of medicine pricing negotiations, which he said "will decide the future of pharmaceutical research in the UK".

 

Mr Whitehead explained that the government wants to focus on targeting big breakthroughs, but that developments in medicine are made in incremental steps.
