Anacor director receives science award

Scientific medal goes to Dr Lucy Shapiro of Anacor Pharmaceuticals.

A director and co-founder of Anacor Pharmaceuticals has been awarded the National Medal of Science, one of the most prestigious honours to be granted to inventors, scientists and engineers in the US.Dr Lucy Shapiro was informed yesterday (January 17th) that achievements in her work on pharmaceutical technology with Anacor had been the primary reason for the medal being awarded to her.


Nominees are usually selected on the basis of extraordinary knowledge or contributions in a number of fields, including mathematics, computing, chemistry, engineering or in the case of Dr Shapiro, biological sciences.
"Anacor congratulates Lucy on this tremendous achievement,” said David Perry, Anacor’s chief executive. “Lucy’s groundbreaking research contributed to the creation of Anacor’s technology platform which has resulted in eight drug candidates that are currently in development."
Dr Shapiro graduated from Brooklyn College, receiving a Ph.D in molecular biology from the Albert Einstein School of Medicine.
