Report Highlights Role of Biotech in Neglected Disease R+D

A new report has highlighted the important role that the biotechnology sector is playing in global health research and development.

Small and medium-sized biotechnology companies are playing an increasingly important role in research and development in the field of neglected diseases, a new report has found.

Biotech companies are currently participating in 39 per cent of all current development projects involving drugs, vaccines and diagnostic solutions for neglected diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, according to the Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO) and BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH).

Their report - which was presented at the 2012 BIO International Convention in Boston this week (June 18th) - indicates that biotechnology is proving vital for innovations in global health.
