pH sensitive and pH-independent cellulose derivatives. Eastman CAP (cellulose acetate phthalate) enteric coating material is pH-sensitive cellulose derivative designed for coating pharmaceutical tablets or granules.  It may also be used as a matrix material in solid dose forms. CAP enteric coating material withstands prolonged contact with acidic gastric fluids, but dissolves readily in the mildly acidic to neutral environment of the small intestine.The nonenteric  coating material  includes CA ( cellulose acetate), CAB (cellulose acetate butyrate) and CAP (cellulose acetate propionate). They do not show pH-dependent solubility characteristics and have found extensive use in solid pharmaceutical dosage forms, where they are typically used for controlled drug delivery.
