US Government Is 'Largest Funder of Global Health R&D'

A report has found that the US government provides around 45 per cent of total investment in global health R&D.

The US government has invested $12.7 billion in global health research and development (R&D) over the last ten years, making it the largest funder in the world, a report has found.

Published by the Global Health Technologies Coalition (GHTC) and Policy Cures, the report states that the US government provides around 45 per cent of total global investment in the creation of new drugs, vaccines and diagnostic technologies for neglected diseases.

As a result, it contributed to the development of the majority of new global health products released between 2000 and 2010.

The US government made investments worth $1.4 billion in 2010 alone, up from $685 million in 2000.
