Suspected cyber attack hits Dr. Reddys
Company closes "key" plants in India, the US, Russia and Brazil as a precautionary measure.
In the early hours of last Thursday, Dr. Reddy's — one of India's leading pharmaceutical companies — was forced to shut down some of its data center services in response to a suspected cyber attack.
In a company statement, Dr. Reddy's advised that in the wake of a "detected cyber-attack" it had "isolated all data services to take preventative actions".
The company has not yet disclosed what led to the data breach or what, if any, damage has been done.
Instead, the company's Chief Information Office, Mukesh Rathi, said on Friday 22 October: “We are anticipating all services to be up within 24 hours and we do not foresee any major impact on our operations due to this incident.”
According to The Economic Times, Dr. Reddy's servers, which house all of the company's drug data and customer/client information, were breached between 4 am and 5 am US time.
As a result, the company decided to shut "key" plants in India, the US, Russia and Brazil as a precautionary measure.
The timing of this data breach is less than ideal; the company and the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, has only just recently received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to conduct an adaptive Phase II/III human clinical trial for Sputnik V vaccine in India.
