Pharmaceutical Approvals Set to Fall This Year

Fitch Ratings predicts a fall in the number of new drug approvals in 2012.

The number of novel drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is likely to be lower this year than in 2011, a report has claimed.

According to Fitch Ratings, the FDA is unlikely to give the green light to more than the 30 new medicines it cleared for marketing last year.

A total of 14 drugs were approved in the first half of 2012, lower than the 18 new approvals in the same period in 2011.

Fitch notes that the global pharmaceutical industry faces a number of challenges this year, including the fact that four best-selling medicines are set to lose their market exclusivity.
