Mesalamine is primarily indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and for maintaining remission of the condition. It is an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat inflammations of the digestive tract such as ulcerative colitis and mild to moderate Crohn's disease. Mesalamine is a bowel specific amino-salicylate drug that after oral administration is metabolized in the gut and has its predominant actions there.
