Benzethonium chloride, also called hyamine, is a man-made chemical that kills germs. It’s a white, odorless powder that dissolves in water and is used in first aid products, soaps, mouthwashes, anti-itch creams, and antibacterial wipes. It works as a powerful disinfectant, killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi—including MRSA, E. coli, C. difficile, and viruses like HIV and hepatitis B & C. The FDA allows it in small amounts (0.1–0.2%) in first aid products, but it’s not approved as a food additive in the US or Europe. It doesn't absorb through the skin and hasn’t shown signs of causing cancer in animal studies. It also clings to skin and hair, leaving a soft feel and lasting protection. In industry, it helps measure and control certain chemicals in water treatment. It's sold under many names like Salanine, BZT, and Antiseptol, and can also be found in grapefruit seed extract and some anesthetics as a preservative.
