Cyclopropane carboxylic acid is a small organic molecule made up of a three-sided carbon ring (called cyclopropane) with an acid group attached. It’s a colorless solid or liquid used mainly in chemical research and manufacturing. One way to make it is by starting with another chemical (4-chlorobutyronitrile), which goes through a couple of steps to form this acid.

This compound is mildly acidic, with a pKa of about 4.65, similar to other acids in its group. It can easily react to form esters—substances often used in making fragrances, flavors, and plastics—especially when using special helpers called Lewis acid catalysts.

Scientists have also used cyclopropane carboxylic acid in plant research, particularly to understand how plants naturally produce ethylene, a gas that affects fruit ripening and plant growth. Although not something used in daily life, it plays an important role in labs and chemical production.
