Boehringer Ingelheim to invest in new AI Accelerator in London

Boehringer Ingelheim has unveiled a cutting-edge AI Accelerator in London’s Knowledge Quarter, marking a significant step in computational innovation and the future of pharmaceutical research.

Boehringer Ingelheim, a global leader in pharmaceutical innovation, has announced the launch of its new AI Accelerator in King’s Cross, London. This initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its computational innovation capabilities, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The new centre is strategically located within London’s Knowledge Quarter, a hub renowned for its concentration of scientific talent, technological expertise, and collaborative opportunities.

The AI Accelerator represents a £150 million investment over the next decade, underscoring Boehringer Ingelheim’s commitment to leveraging AI in pharmaceutical research and development. By 2027, the company aims to have 50 AI experts in place, working to harness the UK’s rich biomedical data landscape and life sciences expertise. This move aligns with the UK’s growing reputation as a global leader in AI and life sciences, providing an ideal environment for innovation.

Nicola Richmond, Head of AI and Machine Learning at Boehringer Ingelheim, highlighted the importance of this investment, stating, “Building foundational AI capabilities that allow us to better understand the biology of disease takes data, talent, and trusted partnerships. The UK’s rich biomedical data landscape, life sciences expertise, and technological know-how provide the perfect environment to do exactly that.”

The London centre will join Boehringer Ingelheim’s existing computational innovation hubs in Austria, Germany, and the United States. Together, these centres specialise in AI, machine learning, human genetics, and computational biology. The addition of the UK location is expected to accelerate the company’s ability to understand disease biology, identify promising biological mechanisms, and develop innovative therapies for patients with unmet medical needs.

Jan Nygaard Jensen, Global Head of Computational Innovation at Boehringer Ingelheim, praised London’s unique ecosystem, saying, “London’s concentration of AI talent, scientific ambition, and openness to collaboration is exceptional. Our commitment is to build on this foundation and extend Boehringer Ingelheim’s computational innovation capabilities across our global network, getting closer to understanding the root cause of disease, faster.”

The launch of the AI Accelerator was celebrated at an event attended by government ministers, academic leaders, and representatives from the technology and AI sectors. This milestone not only strengthens Boehringer Ingelheim’s global footprint but also reinforces the UK’s position as a key player in the intersection of AI and life sciences.

By embedding itself in the Knowledge Quarter, Boehringer Ingelheim is poised to foster long-term collaborations, attract top-tier talent, and drive impactful advancements in medicine. This investment signals a new era of innovation, where AI and machine learning are set to transform the future of healthcare.
