Expert reveals fall of clinical trials in Europe

A respected academic has argued that without significant changes in the climate for innovative research in Europe, the continent can expect to see an ongoing fall in clinical trials.
Meir Pugatch, a professor at the University of Haifa, observed that the challenges of conducting clinical trials in Europe are extensive.
To underline this viewpoint, Professor Pugatch said that Europe has a low level of clinical trials activity compared to other developed countries.
"Europe's drop in clinical trials activity and its low level of activity compared to the US, Singapore and others is not merely about red tape, however," he commented.
"As a result of austerity measures, many EU countries have tough cost containment measures in place that reduce incentives for innovation and investment."
Despite this, there are plenty of clinical trials taking place in Europe.
Earlier this month, for instance, researchers working at the University of Nottingham were awarded £2.6 million to lead the clinical trial of the drug tranexamic acid.
