GSK announces £400 million investment in new Cambridge R&D centre

Pharmaceutical giant to establish flagship research facility on Cambridge Biomedical Campus as part of strategic pipeline acceleration

GSK has unveiled plans to establish a major new global research and development centre in Cambridge, UK, marking a significant £400 million investment in British life sciences. The announcement, made on 28 July 2026, represents a strategic move to position the pharmaceutical company at the heart of one of Europe's most dynamic biomedical ecosystems.

The new 300,000 square foot site will be located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in the UK's life sciences "Golden Triangle" and will serve as the home for GSK's R&D operations in the UK. The facility is expected to accommodate more than 1,000 GSK scientists working across the company's key therapeutic focus areas. The Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of the largest biomedical campuses in Europe, hosts more than 22,000 people working in life sciences, with over 37,000 visitors daily. The campus treats more than 1 million patients annually, providing an unparalleled environment for translational research that bridges laboratory science with clinical practice.

The new centre will feature state-of-the-art, tech-enabled laboratories and infrastructure specifically designed to support research in GSK's priority areas: Oncology, Respiratory, Hepatology, Vaccines, and HIV. The location will provide GSK scientists with direct access to leading universities, hospitals, and biotech companies, fostering collaboration and accelerating drug discovery. Luke Miels, Chief Executive Officer of GSK, commented: "This investment will accelerate our R&D and help us deliver new, competitive products. The Cambridge site, currently in development by Prologis, will form part of GSK's wider UK network of collaboration with leading academic institutions and pioneering scientific organisations, including the University of Oxford, King's College London, Imperial College, the University of Manchester, Wellcome, and the Crick Institute. This strategic relocation underscores GSK's commitment to accelerating its R&D pipeline and leveraging collaborative opportunities within the UK's thriving life sciences sector. The investment is expected to serve as a catalyst for innovation, enabling the company to develop its next generation of medicines more rapidly and effectively. The move positions GSK alongside other major pharmaceutical companies in the Cambridge cluster, further cementing the region's status as a global hub for biomedical research and drug development.
