Indian Generics Policy Is Bad News for Big Pharma
Pharmaceutical giants will suffer as a result of India's decision to hand out free generic medicines to its entire population.
India's new $5.4 billion policy to provide free generic drugs for all patients is good news for millions of the country's people, but could cause large pharmaceutical companies to rethink their strategies in the region, it has been claimed.
Under the new plan, which was adopted without fanfare last year, access to medicines will be greatly improved throughout the country as a result of public doctors prescribing generic versions of drugs for free.
The entire 1.1 billion population of India will be eligible for free medicines, but the government drug list will not include branded or non-generic medicines.
In fact, doctors who prescribe branded medicines will be punished for their actions.
