Minocycline improves mood of children with FXS

An antibiotic drug has been found to be beneficial for children with fragile X.

It seems the antibiotic minocycline makes a positive impact on the functioning and mood of children with fragile X syndrome (FXS), where one of the genes on the x chromosome is faulty.
The study, published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioural Pediatrics, found three months of treatment with minocycline yielded better overall results than placebo drugs.
Occurring in one in 4,000 males in the US, FXS is typically more severe in boys than girls because they only have one x chromosome.
Some 55 children were involved in the research, with those treated with the antibiotic scoring better on the Clinical Global Impression Scale than those on the placebo.
"Further studies including long-term follow-up on individuals treated with minocycline are warranted with a careful assessment of side effects and benefits," commented Dr Mary Leigh of the University of California Davis Medical Center.
