Researchers discover biomarkers for IBD
US scientists have discovered certain biomarkers for IBD
A team of researchers from the University of Cincinnati has discovered a number of biomarkers for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
The main forms of IBD include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, with the scientists using the Department of Defense Serum Repository to inform their study.
They identified 50 cases of Crohn's disease and 50 cases of ulcerative colitis from the repository, analysing proteins from three samples per case.
Two samples were taken before diagnosis and one after, with certain proteins found in elevated levels in samples from patients who developed IBD.
The researchers hope to study these findings further in a pediatric population, with Dr Bruce Yacyshyn suggesting more studies are needed to confirm the presence of biomarkers to guide diagnosis, prevention and management of IBD patients.
"This could change the way we currently screen for and treat IBD, which could improve prevention strategies, patient outcomes and their overall quality of life," he concluded.
