Dimethyl sulfoxide HPLC (DMSO) (CAS No. 67-68-5) is a polar organic solvent of colorless characteristic. Various alcohols (primary, secondary, allylic, benzylic, hindered and bicyclic) have been oxidized using DMSO activated by different electrophiles (oxalyl chloride). The products of the reaction are carbonyl compounds. It has been suggested as an alternative solvent to methyl cellosolveto be used in reactions with ninhydrin because of its increased stability. The Dimethyl sulfoxide HPLC Grade formula is (CH3)2SO. It can dissolve both bipolar and polar compounds. It can be soluble in water and a large variety of organic solvents; in brief, it is called DMSO. It is also referred to as the Methanesulfinylmethane, Methyl sulfoxide, Dimethyl(oxido)sulfur and DMSO.
