Monomethyl auristatin E, abbreviated as MMAE, is a synthetic antitumor agent. Due to its toxicity, it cannot be used as a drug alone but is instead conjugated to monoclonal antibodies (mAb). It is an effective antimitotic agent derived from dolastatin, a peptide found in the marine mollusk Dolabella auricularia. These peptides have demonstrated effective in vitro and in vivo activity against various lymphomas, leukemias, and solid tumors in preclinical studies. Their potency is 200 times higher than that of vinca alkaloids.
