Bromocresol Green Free Acid (CAS No. 76-60-8) is a triarylmethane dye that is commonly used as a pH indicator in the laboratory. It is normally a yellow-green to light brown solid powder. Bromocresol Green in its free acid form is very sensitive to changes in pH. Its molecular formula is C21H14Br4O5S and its molecular weight of 698.01. It is hardly soluble in water and has improved solubility in organic solvents like alcohol. Bromocresol Green Free Acid has a clear and sharp color change whereby the color of the solution changes from yellow to blue within a small range of 3.8-5.4, and thus it is very useful in the exact determination of pH. Bromocresol Green (BCG) Free Acid is widely applicable in laboratories where precise pH determination and reliable colorimetric reaction are observed.
