A Day in the Life of a CPHI Attendee

The series aims to highlight some of the indispensable talent involved in all aspects of the pharma value chain, getting to know the people working towards better healthcare across the world. This special edition aims to get to know the people attending CPHI, and their secrets for success.

In this interview we hear from Michael Leuck, Vice President of the European Market at Hongene Biotech, who focuses on Raw Materials and Services for the Manufacturing of Nucleic Acids, and his experience of CPHI Frankfurt 2025.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive?

I go to the VIP lounge and grab a strong coffee. I check my schedule for the day and prepare for the meetings. Then I find the meeting point and go straight to my first appointment.

How do you prepare for a busy day at the event?

Good planning of activities at CPHI is extremely important. I prepare a detailed schedule for the meetings, study the exhibition plan carefully and also take the journey time into account. I fill the gaps with visits to exhibition stands or lectures that interest me.

How do you balance attending sessions, networking, and exploring the exhibition floor?

Meetings with customers have priority. Networking and exploring take place when there is time for it or when appointments are cancelled.

Can you share a memorable interaction or connection you’ve made so far?

I had an insightful conversation with the CEO of a leading custom research organisation in Europe. Both companies are developing new products and technologies in the field of oligonucleotide synthesis, where we can complement each other well. Based on the exchange at CPHI, we were able to establish a successful collaboration.

How do you manage to stay energised and focused, whilst taking care of your wellbeing, throughout the day?

I start the day with a hearty breakfast, as I usually don't have time for lunch. If necessary, I buy a sandwich or snack at one of the stands. It's important to drink regularly and pack drinks, use the lounges, or take advantage of other opportunities that arise, e.g., at the exhibition stands.

How does this tradeshow compare to others you’ve attended or exhibited at?

All other conferences are much easier to organise. We usually have a booth and thus a fixed point for interacting with our customers and interested parties. CPHI is overwhelming due to its size and the high number of participants from all over the world. Networking at smaller events is easier because it is easy to meet people but the variety of topics is not as great.

What’s one thing you’ve learned over the event that you didn’t expect?

How important it is to bring people from all over the world together and gain a comprehensive overview of global activities in the pharmaceutical market.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone attending this event for the first time, what would it be?

That depends on what their objectives are for coming to CPHI. In any case, they should plan their visit well in advance and think about what exactly they want to achieve by attending.

How do you wind down after a long day at the tradeshow?

Any favourite spots or activities in the city? On the second day of the conference, many exhibitor stands host parties with food, drinks, live music, and other activities. This is a great way to relax after a long day, meet people, and celebrate together. On the other days, we go out for dinner with customers, friends, or colleagues.
